Foundations Health VP Recognizes Country View Manager

December 20, 2019
NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles. Whether working in housekeeping or as a nursing assistant, he sees firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

Matt Clark, the Director of Nursing at Country View of Sunbury, emailed me a few weeks ago. He informed me that Annette Casto, the Unit Manager of the Rehab Unit and also MDS Nurse, was asked to take a new position as Regional MDS Nurse. He was extremely happy for her and wanted to send her off in the fashion she deserved. Matt said:

"As you may already know, Annette Casto is finally leaving us here at Country View of Sunbury after nearly 15 years. She is not leaving the company, but she is instead moving to regional MDS. Though it pains me to see such a valued member of our family go, we feel that she has the potential to spread all the amazing work that she does here to other facilities in her area. Just a little bit about her, she was hired in on 1/20/2005 as a floor nurse and, during that time, moved onto MDS for the building and then, like osmosis, absorbed the unit manager position on the rehab unit. Leading by example, she answers call lights, takes people to and from the bathroom, comes into work weekends when staffing was not there, and everything in-between. She sets high expectations for her staff because that is what she sets for herself. I have been the Director of Nursing now for almost 6 months, and Annette has been a wellspring of knowledge. She is one of my greatest assets, has taught me a great deal about management, and what it means to be a good manager. This email really does pale in comparison to how everybody at Country View of Sunbury feels about Annette. She is a true embodiment of the values that Foundations Health Solutions strives to uphold. There is no better person to promote to Regional MDS than Annette Casto."

Here are a few of the "thank-you's" that the staff wanted to send to Annette:

First is a video from Lauren Limbacher (Administrator) and Matt Clark (Director of Nursing):

Coworkers wanted Annette to know how much she is appreciated too:

Next is a video from a resident that had a special connection with Annette:

Matt Clark had an idea for Annette's last day at Country View of Sunbury.

"I see my staff lining the hall heading back towards her unit, congratulating her, and wishing her the best in her new career path. At the end of the hall waiting for her will be her new corporate colleges, symbolizing the years spent here at CVOS and the new journey she will embark on as Regional MDS. My request to you is, can this vision be a reality? I know it would mean the world to Annette, and I want to give her the send-off she deserves."

This is exactly what we did. This all came from our facility leadership.

This is our Culture of Care. We aren't perfect by any means, but the more we listen to our front line staff and our facility leadership, the more we get it right every time.

In closing, I want to give you a few quotes from the Nurses and STNA's that work with Annette every day.

"Whenever we need to get a hold of someone on the weekend or off-hours, she always answers and is always there!"

"She never just meets the standards; she always exceeds them."

"Although we hate to see her go, we are glad that the corporation sees the value she brings and is finally being recognized."

"She was always the first to answer a call light and give a resident care no matter how busy she was or what she had on her plate."

I was helping in the hall at the end when I saw this picture in a residents room that I had to share:

If God is on our side, who can stand against us? We have good people that work hard to make sure our residents all over the state are cared for. We hate to see our dedicated caregivers are left out of the conversation.

Annette – Thank you for your leadership, your example, and your calling. You have lived our "Culture of Care," and you challenge everyone who works for us to live up to the same standard. We love you and we will continue to strive to live up to the same standard.
